New Ships Offer Innovative Activities & Amenities

From bowling alleys to glass-blowing demonstrations at sea, the new ships making their maiden voyages this year feature amenities and activities never before available on a cruise.

Here’s a look at what to expect from some of the most popular cruise lines.

Carnival Cruise Lines – The 3,006-passenger Carnival Splendor, the largest “Fun Ship” ever constructed, features a new Cloud 9 Spa, complete with a thalassotherapy pool, a full gym, and 68 spa staterooms accessible by private elevator. The central pool deck area will have a retractable glass dome and Seaside Theater, which boasts a 270-square-foot outdoor LED screen. Kids will enjoy a 5,500-square-foot play area, and adults will want to check out the Pinnacle Supper Club (Carnival’s specialty restaurant).

Celebrity Cruises – Due in December, the 2,850-passenger Celebrity Solstice will introduce a new class of ships for Celebrity. Staterooms will be larger, with expanded storage space and modular closets. The AquaClass cabins will feature spa amenities and provide guests with exclusive access to the AquaSpa relaxation room, Persian Garden steam room, and the specialty restaurant, Blu. Guests can observe live glassmaking demonstrations in a custom-designed outdoor studio as well as enjoy casual outdoor activities at The Lawn Club, which features live growing grass (not artificial turf).

Holland America Line – Holland America will also introduce a new class when the ms Eurodam debuts in July. The 2,104-passenger vessel features three specialty restaurants, more high-end shops, and staterooms on the top decks.

Royal Caribbean International – The Independence of the Seas is the third ship in the Freedom-class at Royal Caribbean. This huge ship, which accommodates 3,600 passengers, will have all the special features found on her sister ships, including the FlowRider surfing pool, cantilevered whirlpools, rock-climbing wall, and ice-skating rink.

Princess Cruises – A dramatic piazza-style atrium containing small-bite eateries and performing street entertainers promises to be a popular gathering place on the Ruby Princess. Guests will also enjoy an array of dining venues including the signature Sabatini’s Italian restaurant and the Crown Grill steak and seafood restaurant. The ship will also offer Movies Under the Stars, multiple entertainment options, an extensive children’s and teen’s center, and a wedding chapel.
